Architectural Design
This Community Center is for art lovers, art explorers and artists of Princeton as it serves as additional gallery spaces for the Arts Council of Princeton. The design is in the form of a large parking structure that introduces a human-scale accessible ramp throughout its entirety in order to remove the car, give it alternative function and reclaim if for human use and occupation.
By pushing the ramp to the outer face of the structure and approaching it as a continuous entity around the project, it gives the ramp ample recognition from the street view. The ramp then becomes the driving force of the design: defining how the gallery spaces are placed, how people navigate and experience the galleries and how people perceive its form from an external perspective. The ramp and its railing, with its deceptive nature of placement and angles, conttribute to the feeling of intrigue and curiosity that the architectural design, and the art displayed within, hope to activate.
